Since 2009, photographer Niki Grangruth and multimedia artist James Kinser have been collaborating on the Muse series, a body of work that explores issues of non-conforming gender identity, questions common beauty ideals, and challenges the traditional artist / muse relationship.
Muse reimagines and reinterprets well-known works from art history - specifically paintings of female subjects by master painters. Our intention is to retain the visual aesthetics of the original works, while reinventing the context of each piece through the use of a male subject, bodily positioning, the gaze, and costume. Each work within the series intends to disrupt the socially-constructed male / female binary, and draw attention to the flexible and performative nature of gender identity.
